How to Preserve your Patio

Your patio is a natural outdoor extension of your home and it deserves to be properly maintained. After all, you worked hard to create your patio, so shouldn’t you be able to enjoy it for years to come? There are a variety of ways to preserve your patio and how your patio is constructed will guide you how to best go about taking care of it.

Wood decking is sometimes the main material of a patio. Wood is susceptible to the weather and can retain moisture which eventually causes rot. Therefore, in order to preserve and extend the life of your wooden patio, you really need to seal it with a waterproofing material. Depending on the appearance of your patio, sometimes you can just stain and seal your wood patio. Other times, paint can be used in the color of your choice.

Other maintenance tips for wood patios include the sweeping of leaves and other debris off the patio. Part of this includes using a thin tool or even a screwdriver to get in between the cracks of the wood boards. If debris is caught in the cracks, it can rot which in turn can harm the wood. In addition, make sure that waterproof trays are under every planter you have on your wooden patio to catch any errant moisture.

For patios made of concrete or pavers, you can use a bleach solution to scrub down the patio floor. Home improvement stores also have concrete cleaning solutions that might be more environmentally friendly. Through the course of a season, the rain or snow might discolor your concrete and pavers with green or black mold. In addition, dirt can build up causing a drab appearance as well.

Before scrubbing, make sure any patio furniture, plants and other accessories are out of the way. You might want to have the water hose handy. For scrubbing, the best accessory to use is one of those large stiff brush push brooms. This will allow you to stand and scrub rather than getting down on your hands and knees!

Finally, one of the best ways to preserve your patio is the use of a patio cover. Patio covers come in a variety of forms like large umbrellas, portable awnings, canopies and actual roof covers. For homes with patios that extend straight from the home, the roof line could be extended to cover the patio. In areas where the patio is separate from the house, the umbrellas, awnings and canopies are great options. Not only will they protect you from inclement weather should you decide to hang outside during a storm, but they also shield your patio from season to season. Fallen leaves are less likely to accumulate. The concrete, brick and wooden patio floors are protected from the harsh elements like rain and snow.

The great thing about patio covers is that they come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. You even have a variety of materials to choose from. Awnings and canopies could be made from canvas-like materials as would large umbrellas. Aluminum is also used for roofs and awnings. Some of these covers are retractable so you can adjust them as needed.

As you can see, there are a variety of methods in which to preserve your patio. You have to decide how much effort and expense you are willing to spend on the maintenance; this decision will dictate which method to use. Just remember – proper maintenance is necessary to preserve your patio. After all, you want to enjoy it for years to come!
